Pope Leon XVI calls on young people to "achieve great things" and to reject consumerism
To close the Youth Jubilee held in Rome, the pope has expressed his solidarity with young people suffering war in Gaza and Ukraine.
Pope Leon XVI A closed the Jubilee of Youth this Sunday with a message aimed at young people in Tor Vergata, Rome. The pope has encouraged young people not to settle for the minimum: "You must aim to achieve great things, holiness, wherever they are.
Moreover, in his homily, he has opposed the model of consumerist life, which the pope has said is not enough to fill the human heart. "Buying, accumulating, consuming is not enough. We must raise our eyes, look up, into heavenly things," he explains, proclaiming the value of sharing, humility, forgiveness, and peace.
"The totality of our existence does not depend on what we accumulate or have," he adds, "but on what we know to be welcomed and shared."
The ceremony ended with a massive mass, followed by a vigil the night before. Leon XVI said goodbye to the attendees by inviting them to participate in World Youth Day in Seoul in August 2027.
Some of those present have also expressed their solidarity with Palestine.
Gaza and Ukraine
Pope Leon XVI has sent a message of solidarity to young people suffering from the war to young people in Gaza and Ukraine. "We are with young people in Gaza and young people in Ukraine!" he said at one of the most applauded moments of the event.
Along with this, according to the pope, "mass participation" shows that "is possible another world one", based on peace, fraternity and dialogue, "where conflicts are not resolved with weapons".
