President Emmanuel Macron of France has enacted the Euthanasia and Assisted Death Act on Wednesday, which has led to the publication of the legal text in the Official Gazette of the State, although it is not yet in force and will henceforth have to be developed by decree.
The National Assembly passed the euthanasia law on July 15, and last Friday the French Constitutional Council gave the green light, albeit with some reservations, so the law has ended its course.
The text provides for theright to "contribute to death" by allowing the patient to take medication that will kill his or her life; when he or she is physically unable to do so, a doctor or nurse will take care of it.
However, they must meet a number of requirements, including age of majority, French nationality or permanent and legal residence in the country; a serious and incurable life-threatening illness; a terminal or advanced phase ; and physical suffering that cannot be alleviated by any treatment or palliative care.
The law also provides for a specific protocol for the whole process, according to which only one doctor will be responsible for the application of euthanasia, but more professionals will decide whether or not it meets the requirements.
