What caused the sudden floods in Nepal and Tibet?
Yesterday's sudden floods on the border between Nepal and Tibet have left at least 390 dead and 1,400 missing, according to the latest balance sheet provided by local authorities.
The glaciologist Eñaut Izagirre, who was in the vicinity of the area at the time of the disaster, explained in the Faktoria programme of Euskadi Irratia that this was due to the breaking of a large part of the glacier on the north side of Mount Langtang.
With the ice the rocks and sediments moved down the valley, and, according to Izagirre, at some point there was probably a kind of blockade or collapse, causing a sudden explosion of land and floods.
Izaguirre has pointed out that although the Nepalese authorities initially mentioned that the cause was an earthquake, it was the other way around, that it was this fall of ice and rocks that caused the 5.2 magnitude earthquake.
