The Guggenheim of Bilbao, on its way to becoming one of the Seven Contemporary Wonders of the World
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, in addition to being an emblematic work of the contemporary era, has made it possible to place Bilbao as an international cultural reference point and has had a profound and beneficial impact on the tourism, economic and social development of the area.
The Guggenheim Bilbao Museum has been placed among the leading candidates for one of the Seven Contemporary Wonders of the World, under the international initiative launched by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the world's leading travel and tourism sector.
The purpose of this open call is to select and recognize the most unique buildings, monuments and institutions created from the 19th century to the present, which have contributed to a profound transformation of the local environment and the way in which they travel, and to demonstrate the exceptional ability of candidates to attract visitors, promote economic development and promote responsible tourism.
In order to publicize the initiative and gather the votes of its users, the WTTC has created a website that highlights the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Great Egyptian Museum in Giza as a demonstration of the transformative potential of architecture and culture in the evolution of a territory.
The process will take place in several phases:
-
Nominations: The deadline was opened on July 7 and will remain open until the end of the year for users to register their proposals.
-
First selection: the 70 selected proposals will be released on January 7, 2027.
-
Finalists: After a public vote, only 30 finalists remain on the list.
-
Result: Finally, the Seven Contemporary Wonders of the World will be announcedon July 7, 2027.
