The lehendakari has claimed that the Gernika Statute is "the best defence of the Basque Centre" and has called for its protection
With regard to the adoption of the Statute 47 years ago, the Lehendakari has published an article stating that the pact has made it possible to build a "Basque welfare model". In an increasingly deteriorating state environment and in the face of "political forces that question our self-government," the Lehendakari says it is "the best refuge."
Lehendakari Imanol Pradales today praised the Gernika Statute on the 47th anniversary of its adoption. In an article posted on the Linkedin social network, the lehendakari said that the 1979 political pact was the best defence of the Basque Centre and claimed the historic duty of Basque society to preserve and protect it in the face of all that may come and political forces that question self-government.
Under the title "Defence of Self-Government and Self-Government in the Form of Defence ", the Lehendakari has taken stock of the more than four decades since the adoption of the Statute, which he considers to be a major political instrument for consolidating the self-government of the ACV and shaping the Basque welfare model.
Pradales believes that the Statute was a"Realpolitik exercise ", a" minimal agreement "between the Basque groups and Suarez's" constructive attitude ". They drafted a high-level text with content of great political significance. The President has highlighted, among other things, the recognition of self-government and the nature of the" bilateral political pact ".
However, the Lehendakari has denounced the"dennaturalization and erosion" that the Spanish Governments have suffered over the years. After 47 years, it has been completely unfulfilled. The President has referred to the 14 competences transferred in this legislature, but he has recalled that the economic regime of Social Security and the ports of Bilbao and Pasaia have not yet been transferred.
For all these reasons, Imanol Pradales has called for the defence of self-government. The defence of self-government is the defence of what is essential: the possibility of governing our own home, of having the necessary capacity to defend our interests. The Lehendakari has said that, thanks to the Statute, the Basque Centre has become a refuge from an increasingly uncertain world and to face the challenges of the future: climate change, migration or technological breakdown.
In the view of the Lehendakari, this defence isa "responsibility" and a "historical obligation" of Basque society. "Let us do it positively, without going against anyone, and without proclaiming confrontation (...) Let us not forget that we decide because we are and we decide because we are," he stressed.
