The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the head of business of the Israeli Embassy in Spain, Dana Erlich, to express its indignation at the statements of the Israeli Foreign Minister, Gideon Sar, who accused President Pedro Sánchez of instigating pro-Palestinian protests that led to the cancellation of the final stage of the Return to Spain in Madrid.
Network's words on the X social network pointed directly to Sanchez as the instigator of demonstrations that, in his view, "attacked" the cycling event.
The Israeli minister described the suspension of the competition as "shameful to Spain". These accusations have been described as "unacceptable" by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which has decided to formally convey its condemnation of the Israeli diplomatic representation in Madrid.
This is not the first time that the Spanish Government has called for Israeli diplomacy in recent months. Last week, a number of statements by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who was accused of making Spain a "flagrant genocidal threat to Israel," were called back.
The business is currently handled by Israel's interlocutor in Madrid, as Israel has no ambassador to Spain since May 2024. Netanyahu's government decided to withdraw after Sanchez announced that it would officially recognize Palestine as a state, opening a new period of tension in relations between the two countries.
