Following the ceasefire on the list, the Basque Government has approved the Programme of Action and Economic Assistance for the Recovery of Gaza. The Plan focuses on two main areas: health care for Gazatese children in Basque hospitals and financial assistance for humanitarian organisations operating in Gaza.
The decision was taken at the weekly meeting of the Governing Council and was followed by a press conference by Spokeswoman Maria Ubarretxena, Health Counsellor Alberto Martínez and Wellness, Youth and Demographic Challenge Counsellor Nerea Melgosa .
21 children have been treated in Osakidetza.
Martinez has explained that of the 39 Gazatese children who have arrived in the Spanish State since the beginning of the Israeli offensive, 21 have been treated by Osakidetza and five are expected to arrive by the end of the month.
Children treated at Cruces and Donostia hospitals have traumatological injuries, burns, neurological and cardiological problems , or oncological diseases . Most have required plastic, traumatological, cardiological or neurosurgery surgery, and many cases require prolonged follow-up.
Currently, six children follow active treatment, three in oncology, two in heart problems and one in the mental health unit, and the rest receive follow-up to chronic processes.
In addition, Osakidetza has provided care to the families of these children: "On average, each minor has arrived with two assistants, and all of them have been provided with outpatient care," said Martinez, adding that a mother has had to be admitted to Donostia Hospital.
Request for extension of residence permits
These children and relatives have arrived in our country with a limited visa, so Melgosa has indicated that the Government will ask the Spanish Government to extend the deadline, using the same formula used with refugees from Ukraine. "The aim is to ensure that these people are cured, not to worry about papers," Melgosa stressed.
Financial aid of EUR 1.2 million
The plan will allocate €600,000 to UNICEF tofinance child nutrition and mobile clinics in Gaza; and€250,000 to UNRWAfor child and youth development projects.
On the other hand, the Department of Education and Vocational Training will open an "academic corridor" in collaboration with Basque universities and FP schools for the reception and training of Gazatese students.
This project, which has a budget of 350,000 euros and will initially offer 20 places , provides for accommodation, academic tutoring, rapid academic validation and teaching of Spanish , among other measures.
In addition, aspecial fund of EUR 800,000 is planned for the Gaza\A0NGOs working there to meet special needs.
