The General Meetings of Álava have begun proceedings to formally and definitively revoke the appointments of 'Father of the Province' and 'Deputy General of Honour' granted to Francisco Franco and the title of 'Father of the Province' granted to Emilio Mola.
EAJ-PNV, EH Bildu, PSE-EE and Elkarrekin Araba registered the Foral Standard Proposal yesterday and the General Meetings Bureau today approved its processing.
The proposal is based on the current regulations on democratic memory, Law 9/2023 of 28 September on Historical and Democratic Memory of the Basque Country and Law 20/2022 on Democratic Memory, which orders the suspension of recognition for "merits related to violations of freedoms".
The text submitted by the groups also reflects the steps taken by both the General Meetings and the Provincial Council of Álava towards historical memory.
Now, once the procedure has begun, it will be discussed directly in plenary, without first passing through the committee.
