The Council of Ministers will today agree on economic measures to mitigate the impact of the war in the Middle East
The Decree-Law will be adopted in Congress next Thursday and a detailed plan will be put on the table, structured in four areas: structural measures, a tax package, specific aid to affected sectors and assistance to vulnerable persons.
Press conference after the Council of Ministers.
The Council of Ministers willhold an extraordinary meeting this Friday to discuss the comprehensive action plan to address theconsequences of the Middle East War . Thus, the parties that make up the Spanish Government are finalising a Royal Decree-Law aimed at alleviating theeffects of the increase in fuel and electricity .
Following meetings with the social partners, representatives of the sectors most affected by the conflict and parliamentary groups, the Spanish Government will put on the table a plan structured in four areas: structural measures, a tax package, specific aid to the sectors most affected and a network of protection for the most vulnerable.
The first of these areas is structural, the aim of which is to strengthenthe promotion of renewable energies by encouraging energy communities, self-consumption or installations such as heat pumps, as well as the promotion of electrification.
The second is aimed at reducing the cost of electricity by means of fiscal measures. The third block is aimed at mitigating the impact of rising fuel prices , with particular attention to agriculture, fisheries, transport and the high-energy and gas industries. Finally, the fourth block includes social measures, including ensuring that the most vulnerable groups are not cut off from energy supply.
The decree will contain only 'agreed and moderate measures', and it is therefore possible to reject some ofthe measures introduced in previous crises, including a 20-cent fuel bonus during the Ukrainian war or a reduction in food VAT.
The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez , is expected to appear at the end of the CouncilofMinisters to report on the decisions taken .
Like all decree-laws, it would enter into force immediately; however, it must be ratified or rejected by Congress within a maximum of 30 days. The Board of Spokespersons has agreed, as soon as it reaches Congress, to quickly qualify the Bureaux for entry into next week's plenarywithout delay in its validation.
In this context, Sanchez has called on all parliamentary groups to act "responsibly"to ensure the adoption of the package.
