Garaikoetxea, at his last appearance: "Basque society will overcome the challenges of the future, united and respectful of diversity."
The tribute to Carlos Garaikoetxea in June 2025 was attended by, among others, three councillors of the time, who highlighted among their achievements the bidegorris, the unified Euskera and the purchase of the Palace of Ajuria Enea.
On 16 June 2025, the current Basque Governmentpaid tribute to Garaikoetxea at the Ajuria Enea Palace in Vitoria-Gasteiz, with the assistance of three of its councillors: the Education Counsellor, Pedro Miguel Etxenike; the Territorial Policy and Public Works Counsellor, Javier Lasagabaster.
Garaikoetxea recalled the difficulties encountered by the first Basque Government that he presided over since 1980, but stressed that Euskadi is a "courageous and hard-working" society that has overcome challenges and that, "united and respectful of diversity", will overcome those of the future.
The lehendakari Garaikoetxea expressed his gratitude to Imanol Pradales for his "generosity" in convening the event in Ajuria Enea, "a loving event in which, moreover, I have been very pleased to participate withthethree counsellors, "he said." Ajuria Enea was my home for six years, and it is as if time had not passed, because time has not managed to make our memories disappear. "
"Today we look back with gratitude to celebrate what we have built together. I am convinced that once we have overcome the turbulent past with good note, Euskadi will successfully face the complex challenges of the future and adapt them to its advantage," Garaikoetxea added.
In the words of the President of that first government, "thechallenges ofthe future are great, but we have a greater capacity to overcome them. We are a brave and hard-working nation. United, based on loyal cooperation and respect for diversity, we will build a better, more prosperous and more sustainable Euskadi. "
Garaikoetxea recalled that since that time, in 1980, very painful difficulties and moments had to be overcome. "I cannot erase from memory the explosion that killed the children at his school (in Ortuella), those floods... We were able to rebuild everything that had fallen, but it left a mark on our memory forever," he recalled.
Garaikoetxea greeted his successor with the following message: "Imanol, good luck, and courage and strength."
