The plenary of the Basque Parliament rejected EH Bildu's proposal for EITB to give "free" audio content and subtitles in Basque to international streamingplatforms , which voted against PNV, PSE-EE, PPand VOX, while EH Bilduvoted in favour.
EHBildu MP Garikoitz Mugika has explained that the presenceof theBasque language in the catalogues of the streaming platforms remains "very low", which puts the Basque language "at a disadvantage in the digital environment".
It has therefore called for it to be based on the model of collaboration between the Generalitat de Catalunya and 3Cat, which provides international platforms with a wide range of audio and subtitles free of charge, which has made it possible to disseminate content in Catalan quickly and efficiently, at no additional cost to operators.
EH Bildu has lamented the lack of "agreement" with the Basque Government because the Euskera "needs a shared path to make policies in its favor in a coordinated and intelligent manner."
The PNV member of parliament, Garikoitz Mendizabal, has stated that the platforms cannot be "forced" to have content in Basque, but has valued the work of the Basque Government, within a "strategy of collaboration and encouragement", to disseminate content in Basque through "agreements with platforms and distributors".
With regard to EH Bildu's proposal, he pointed out that "it is not the most convenient thing" for EITB "to give any content to anyone" and explained that 3Cat has a "greater catalogue" and "greater investment capacity" than the Primeran platform, although he stressed that the Basque catalogue offers "a rich, abundant and free catalogue" to ensure that "the availability of content in Euskera is guaranteed".
PSE-EE MP Maider Lainez has explained that there are dozens of minority languages in Europe, but only five have platforms like Primeran. "In 17 countries, there are only five languages, so the presence of minority languages on audiovisual platforms is low."
Lainez has called for "seeking alliances to revitalize the Basque language in the audiovisual field", in which he stressed that the Basque Government "has tripled funding for production in Basque", which has made "productions in Basque at the San Sebastian Film Festival the strongest in the history of Basque cinema".
Thespokeswoman for the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats, Laura Garrido , has rejected the "unserious" initiative resulting from the "linguistic obsessions" of EH Bildu.
Finally, the Basque Parliament has adopted a proposal by the PNV and the PSE-EE urging the Basque Government to cooperate with EITB in orderto find the best way to disseminate audiovisual content in Basque as much as possible, and to strengthen the relationship with international audiovisual platforms and operators in order to increase the availability of content in Basque in catalogues.
It also calls for the coordination of the audiovisual offering in cooperation with Navarre and the French Basque Country in the field of the Basque Country to improve the presence of these contents in all the Basque territories.
