PNV and EH Bildu will remember together in Bergara the creation of the Movement of Mayors and the abolition of the Fueros
200 municipal representatives from both parties will claim recognition of the Basque nation and the right to decide in a symbolic act that will combine past, present and future.
200 mayors and councillors of the PNV and EH Bildu will meet today, Sunday, in Bergara to commemorate two unique ephemerides: the 150 anniversary of the repeal of the Basque Fueros and the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Movement of Mayors. Accompanied by the General Deputy of Gipuzkoa, Eider Mendoza, andabout 500 guests, they will claim the recognition of the Basque nation and the right to decide .
A century later, in 1976, after the end of Francoism, 70 nationalist mayors gathered in Bergara to reaffirm the identity of the people, the democratic tradition of the municipalities and the will of self-government. Fifty years later, they will pay tribute to the initiators of this initiative and take over from them, arguing that "the Basque nation is not a thing of the past, but a democratic need of the present".
Prior to the event,on Friday , the PNV and EH Bildu jointly issued a declaration calling for a new political relationship between the Basque Country and the State. The text, known as the Bergara Declaration, links today's ephemerides with the defence of the Basque self-government and calls for a "relationship based on mutual respect" and "recognition between two political subjects".
On Saturday, the PSE-EE General Secretary of Gipuzkoa, José Antonio Asensio , accused nationalist parties of wanting to "divide society" and build "a purely nationalist society."
The ceremony will begin at 12:00 with a procession, just like they did in 1976.
