Two arrested in Bilbao for assaulting a young man wearing a Spanish T-shirt during the World Cup final
Detainees are charged with hate crimes and bodily harm and public disorder, and no further arrests are ruled out.
The National Police arrested last Monday in Bilbao two 29-year-old men accused of injuring a young man during the World Cup final played by the Spanish and Argentine teams. The detainees are also charged with a hate crime and public disorder.
The Ministry of the Interior recalls that thefinalof the 2026 World Cup between the Spanish and Argentine teams, which took place on 19 July, was displayed on a screen in the park of Doña Casilda in Bilbao.
Accordingtothe ministry, "as part of the initiative launched by various groups linked to the left abertzale, and by the collective '7baietz', a demonstration was called against the Spanish selection, which departed from La Casilla Square and ended in the vicinity of the park".
How was the attack and police intervention in Campuzano Square?
According to the Ministry of the Interior, the march, consisting of some 350 people, took a tour of these two areas, insulting people wearing the Spanish team's T-shirt. The situation deteriorated asthey arrived in the vicinity of Plaza Campuzano, where several attacks took place that caused damage to both urban furniture and nearby hotel premises, as can be seen from images broadcast on social media and media.
In the same place, a young man sitting on a terrace waiting for the start of the game was attackedby a group, the ministry said.
After receiving the first blow, he fell to the ground and was kicked and more beatenby demonstrators. The young man managed to escape and took refuge inside a bank branch while three girls accompanying him tried to stop the attack.
The protest ended with the charge of the Ertzaintza
At that time, the Ertzaintza charged the demonstrators in the square, then the injured young man went to a health facility and filed a complaint at the police station.
After receiving the complaint, the officers of the Bilbao General Information Police Station managed to identify and arrest the alleged perpetrators ,who are charged with hate crimes, public disorder and injury.
Those arrested will be taken into custody later this Tuesday after the completion of police proceedings. The National Police does not rule out further arrests.
