State of emergency
For its part, the Board of Spokespersons of the City of Ceuta, composed of the PP, PSOE, Vox, MDyC and Ceuta Ya!, has called for the closureof the border with Morocco "as a matter of urgency and immediately".
The President of Ceuta, Juan Vivas, has urged the Spanish Government to declare a "state of emergency" and to assume a single command, while sending a "message of tranquillity" to the citizens. "This is not the first time that Ceuta has faced such a situation.
Response from the Ministry of the Interior
The Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, has explained that thedeclaration of a state of emergency is a mechanism envisaged for natural and technological disasters and not for migration crises.
However, he has assured us that the Spanish Government will strengthen the means at its disposal to restore the situation.
This morning, Grande-Marlaska spoke to President Vivas and announced that he will be travelling to Ceuta tomorrow morning to see the situation firsthand.
