According to the association, the prisoner had been suffering from severe cognitive impairmentfor a long time, which prevented him from knowing the names and faces, a situation known to the prison itself, which was usually under surveillance in the infirmary.
According to the organization, in the days leading up to his death, the prisoner suffered pain in the rib area and blood in the excrement, as well as a fall and, according to other prisoners, suspected a more serious health problem.
According to Salhaketa Araba, on Monday, July 20, an official insisted that health personnel take careof theprisoner, believing that his condition was very serious , after which he was taken to hospital, where he died that same night.
The Association notes that the reconstruction of the events has been made possible by the testimony of several prisoners who were providing informal assistance and care to J.J.H. in prison, a situation which, in its view, reflects solidarity between persons deprived of their liberty and the lack of information provided by the prison.
During the rally, Salhaketa Araba called for greater transparency about what happens in prisons and advocated the need toopen a public debate on the living conditions of prisoners and the care they receive.
The organization has also stated that the death of J.J.H. ezin is "understood as an isolated incident", considering that the Zaballa prison has accumulated several deaths under surveillance in recent years, and has therefore requested clarification of the circumstances of the latter case and a review of the protocols for the care of inmates with serious health problems.
