Three new spotlights have been detected in Galicia, the situation has worsened in the Leonese region of Bierzo. More towns have been ordered to vacate eta. A total of 403,171 hectares have been burned in Spain by 2025, according to Copernicus.

The forest fires in Spain are being the protagonists of the summer, so demonstrations have been held in Galicia and Ponferrada to denounce the situation in the territory and to call for the resignation of the local government.

Geologist Antonio Aretxabala points out the need to differentiate forest as an ecosystem and mountain as an industrial exploitation, where the danger lies. He warns that the next floods will be worse in the area because the soil is eroded.

There have been numerous professional Biscayans in the Leonese town of Casasuertes who have been helping to put out the fires that have burned the northwest of the peninsula since Monday in Castilla y León. Carlos Uriagereka, head of the Forestry Service of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, has stated that it has been hard, but they have been happy to return to the Basque Country because they have managed to control the fire by making firewalls.

There are still about 20 active foci in Castilla León, Galicia and Extremadura, and the wind is making it difficult to extinguish the fire at various points, while the rain that has fallen in the last few hours in northern León has helped to control the flames around the Peaks of Europe. On the other hand, the firefighters displaced from the ACV have taken their way home.

In the town of San Vicente de Leira, in Ourense, the fire has caused great damage. Eighty percent of the houses in the village are burnt down.

Extinction work is currently under way in the municipality of Fasgar (Leon), where thousands of hectares of fire have been burned, with a capacity of 1,000 litres.

Since they have managed to stop some major fires, the situation remains alarming in many provinces. All eyes are on Extremadura, in the fire of the Jarilla  in Cáceres, where the fire has jumped to Salamanca.

According to data released this Wednesday by the European Union programme Copernicus, the European Fire Information System (EFFIS), the area burned in 2025 is significantly higher than the 42 615 hectares burned in 2024 in 219 forest fires.

Ponferrada, Astorga, León and today in La Bañeza. In recent days, protests against the authorities of Castile and Leon over fire management have multiplied. Those affected by the fires demand that a level 3 emergency be decreed and that the state take command of the fight against fires.

The Foral Government has taken this decision because of the weather conditions planned for the next few days, according to SOS Navarra.

A total of 58 firefighters from the Basque Autonomous Community (CAV) have travelled to Castilla y León to assist in the control of forest fires following the Board's request for assistance to the Basque Government, while 24 professionals from Navarra have travelled to Asturias.

According to the data, 2025 would be the worst fire year in Spain, exceeding even the rough year of 2022, when nearly 200,000 hectares were burned until August.

Around a thousand people in León have protested against the management carried out so far and have called for resignations, as well as the declaration of level 3 emergency, so that the management would be transferred from the Junta de Castilla y León to the Spanish Government.

In particular, the measure was taken after the Junta de Castilla y León requested assistance from the Basque Government Eusko Jaurlaritza, thus joining the helicopter recently sent to help put out the fires.

Thus, four people have already died as a result of the fires on the Iberian peninsula, three of them in the province of León, where the fourth victim died on Tuesday from burns in Tres Cantos (Madrid).
