Hurtado predicts that the tourist fee will be applied "throughout the Basque Country" from 2027
As explained by the Counsellor for Tourism, Trade and Consumer Affairs The General Meetings may approve the rule before the summer, but it will not be implemented immediately because the municipalities will have six months to adapt to their legislation.
The Minister for Tourism, Trade and Consumer Affairs of the Basque Government, Javier Hurtado, believes that from 2027 the tourist rate will be set "throughout the Basque Country".
At a press conference held this Wednesday in Bilbao to present the preliminary draft of the new tourism law, Hurtado referred to the tourist tax that will be regulated by the Member States and managed by the municipalities.
The preliminary draft of the Rules of Procedure of the Deputies, the same rule for the three, provides for the payment of a tax for overnight stays in all tourist accommodation.
They shall then be approved by the General Assemblies and may be approved before the summer, although their entry into force does not guarantee their immediate implementation, since the municipalities have the final say and shall have a period of six months to develop their tax ordinances or adapt them to the new rule.
Hurtado has argued that "anyone who comes to enjoy the Basque Country must contribute to the maintenance of the Basque Country" and has shown that thanks to the introduction of the new tax the municipalities will have a collection that "affects" their neighbours and visitors.
