Basordas Kalak of Lemoiz (Bizkaia) will host an aquaculture project for the cultivation of sole, which will involve a public-private investment of 170 million euros over the next decade and will generate 200 direct jobs, with production of approximately 3,000 tons per year.
The Aquacria Basordas initiative, promoted by Sea Eight together with the Atitlan group and to be installed at the former Lemoiz nuclear power plant, has been owned by the Basque Government since 2019 and aims to transform this area into an integrated aquaculture plant.
The President, Imanol Pradales, has stressed during the presentation that it is "much more than a fish farm" and has stressed that the project aims to bean international benchmark . For her part, the Food, Rural Development, Agriculture and Fisheries Counsellor, Amaia Barredo, has pointed out that this activity will make it possible to transform an infrastructure that is not in use into a sustainable production facility with an impact on the food, industrial and economic fields.
The driving companies have framed the project within the so-called blue economy , adding that the production system has been designed to ensure a healthy and balanced diet without affecting marine ecosystems.
