Basque trade unions present 130,000 signatures to promote their own minimum wage in the Basque Country
ELA, LAB, ESK, Steilas, Hiru and Etxalde hope that the political parties will support the initiative and that the Basque Parliament will approve the proposal before the end of the year .
OnThursday, thetrade unions ELA, LAB, ESK, Steilas, Hiru and Etxalde presented 130,000 signatures to theBasque Parliament to promote a People's Legislative Initiative aimed at establishing an Interprofessional Minimum Wage (SMI) for the Basque Country.
This action is the first step towards creating an independent SMI. The trade unions hope that the political parties will support the initiative and that the Basque Parliament will approve theproposal before the end of the year .
They have also called on the politicalparties in Navarre to process such a bill in the Navarre Parliament.
"The collection of signatures has made clear the will of the workers. Now is the time to decide whether or not to support this movement. If you say that a higher minimum wage is needed than that established in the state, now is the time to act," the unions say.
In addition, these unions have announced that they will ask Congress to amend the Workers' Statute in order to consolidate this measure.
The trade union representatives stress the importance of having reached this stage and regard it as an important step forward in the fight to improve working and wage conditions in the Basque Country.
For its part, the Euskal Herria Pensioners' Movement this week addressed the calendar of mobilizations to call on the Basque Government to ensure that minimum pensions are equal to the minimum wage, which is' a popular cry '.
