The European Union has banned sexualised images created with artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence systems whose sole purpose is to create both sexualized images and content related to child sexual abuse will be banned from 2 December 2026. The measure has been agreed after the hika-mica created by Grok, the AA tool of the X social network.
The institutions of the European Union have reached an agreement on Thursdayto ban, without the consent of individuals, sexualised images created with artificial intelligence.
Under the early morning agreement, artificial intelligence systems for the sole purpose of producing such images or content related to child sexual abuse, as well as systems capable of being used for various purposes, shall be prohibited if they do not have "reasonable security measures" to prevent the dissemination of such content.
The ban will enter into force on December 2, 2026, and the measure has been agreed following a dispute over the images created by Grok with the X social network artificial intelligence tool. They will have until then to design appropriate protective measures.
"Our companies and citizens want two things in artificial intelligence regulations: to be able to innovate and feel safe. Today's agreement fulfils those two goals," European Commission Vice-President Henna Virkkunen said on social media.
The EU has thus imposed a new limit on the creation of this type of content in the face of action already sanctioned by the criminal laws of the Member States.
Furthermore, the institutions of the European Union have postponed until December 2026 the obligationto place watermarks on all content produced with artificial intelligence, such as photographs, videos and audios, so that users can easily identify content produced by a machine.
