The US today declared that the meeting between White House representative Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin has gone "well," but Washington has maintained its intention to impose secondary sanctions on Russia next Friday, when the ultimatum to stop the war in Ukraine expires.
"The meeting between Russia and Special Representative Witkoff has gone well. Russia wants to remain in contact with the United States. Secondary sanctions are expected to be imposed on Friday," a senior AB government official told the press.

On the Truth Social platform, Trump described today's three-hour meeting between Putin and Witkoff in Moscow as "fruitful."
"My special envoy, Steve Witkoff, has just had a fruitful meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Great progress has been made! I have since communicated it to some European allies," the Republican leader explained.
Trump announced that he would impose sanctions on Russia and its trading partners if no agreement was reached on the war in Ukraine, and on July 29 he reduced the deadline for doing so from 50 to 10 days, an ultimatum that expires on Friday.
The fifthmeeting between Putin and Witkoff since the beginning of the year da - the last was in April - and so far the Russian leader has not accepted the request for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
