Early investigations have shown that the Lisbon funicular cable was broken
This cable was attached to another cabin in the funicular and served as a counterweight.
The Portuguese Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Air and Rail Accidents (GPIAAF) has ensured that the cable connecting the two cabins of the Gloria Funicular (Lisbon), which was used for the counterweight mechanism, was interrupted at the point connected to the cabin at the top of the route. This is the first preliminary investigation into the accident involving16 people killed and more than 20 injured.
According to research, neither the other elements of the cable nor the other elements of the funicular show "significant apparent anomalies." The cable, consisting of six strings of 36 steel wires, has been in use for six years.
The pre-accident inspection concluded that the cable had to be replaced within 263 days . The person responsible for the maintenance of the funicular and the installation of the cable system is a private outsourced company.
According to the preliminary report, the brakes were activated, but the brakes were not able to stop the booths because the balance provided by the counterweight is necessary.
However, researchers have indicated that "no compelling conclusions can be drawn at the moment" and within 45 daysthe final report will be published .
Five Portuguese, three British, two South Koreans, two Canadians, one Swiss, one Ukrainian, one American and one French died in the accident, according to the Lusa news agency on the latest balance sheet.
