For the Catalan translation of Tere Irastortza's poems, Etxepare-Laboral Kutxa Translation Award
Glosak · The Catalan translation of the selection of poems created by writer Glossar el Món Tere Irastortza between 1980 and 2023 has won the Etxepare-Laboral Kutxa Translation Award.
The book was published last year by the Valencia seal Ediciones Contrabando, in a bilingual edition of Catalan-Euskera, with translation by Manel Rodríguez Castelló.
They will receive EUR 4 000 in half from translators and publishers and EUR 2 000 in additional aid to enable the winners to continue promotional work (presentations, advertising campaigns, etc.) in the country where the literary work has been published.
The book contains 43 years of Tere Irastortza's poetic career (Zaldibia, 1961), and the jury has stressed that the translation is "excellent, without language errors, with a quick reading and true to the style of the original text."
The award was created in 2015 to recognize the translation of literary works written and published in Basque, and previously awarded the translations of Uxue Alberdi (Catalan), Mira Agur Meabe (English), Katixa Agirre (Dutch), Bernardo Atxaga (Japanese), Eider Rodriguez (Spanish), Joseba Sarrionandia (Catalan), Gabriel Aresti (Ukrainian), Kirme Uriaga (Japanese) and Joseba Sarrionandia (Catalan).
Manel Rodriguez-Castelló (Alcoy, 1958) holds a degree in Hispanic Philology from the University of Valencia and was a Catalan professor of secondary education from 1983 to 2018. His first translation from the Basque language was the volume "Muga" (Pruna-Edicions del Buc, 2021), which included poems by four Basque poets: Felipe Juaristi, Juan Ramón Makuso, Pello Otxoteko and Aritz Gorrotxategi.
