Bilbao airport carries out random checks on passengers from Italy without incident
The measure was activated this Saturday and will last until 7 September in response to the Italian Government's decree to suspend the Schengen area for travellers from Spain.
Since this Saturday, Bilbao Airport has been conducting random checks on passengers travelling to and from Italy, and there have been no significant incidents this weekend, according to its director, Ivan Grande.
Interviewed on Radio Euskadi, Grande has specified that checks are being carried out on boarding gates and arrivals in Bilbao and has stated that on Saturday and Sunday "there have been hardly any incidents".
Spain has imposed border controls on passengers from Italy on Saturday. The measure, which will last until 7 September, responds to the fact that the Italian Government, with Giorgia Meloni at the head, unilaterally decreed thesuspension of the Schengen area for travellers from Spainon 31 July due to the migration crisis in Ceuta.
The airport manager has admitted that European citizens may have "some drawbacks"from these random checks.
