In the words of Rector Joxerramon Bengoetxea, "the issue of the genocide of the Palestinian people is a priority" for the UPV-EHU. He recalled that in April 2024 they agreed "to break off relations with universities and institutions that do not condemn the crimes being committed against humanity in Palestine." 

The rector of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Joxerramon Bengoetxea, has insisted on Wednesday that "the issue of the genocide of the Palestinian people is a priority in our university" and has implied that the UPV has in recent months renounced research projects worth 247 million euros in the field of biomedicine or computer science because of their connection with the State of Israel.

At his hearing, Bengoetxea urged the European Commission and the Spanish Government to exclude universities, research centres and institutions in Israel from European research cooperation funds, academic or cultural. 

Of the two laboratories selected in the Spanish state to collect samples taken on Mars, one belongs to the UPV. From the analysis of these samples, this laboratory at the Leioa campus will be able to determine whether or not there has been life on Mars. 

The Department of Health of the Basque Government and Osakidetza have identified 70 contacts that will be reviewed and monitored in the coming days.

Asked about the incidents at the opening ceremony of the 2025-2026 course, UPV/EHU Rector Joxerramon Bengoetxea has stated that the insults received by some of the participants in the event are "deplorable. They frustrated the message of solidarity that our university prepared for Gaza," added Bengoetxea.

During the rally, convened by the Ikasle Abertzaleak group, several people have come together to demand that Israel boycott and accuse the UPV and the Basque Government of being "complicit in the genocide".

Joxerramon Bengoetxea , in his first opening act as rector, has advocated to promote the social commitment and internationalization of the university. Lehendakari Carlos Garaikoetxea, former rector Nekane Balluerka and former footballer Jose Angel Iribar have received gold medals for their work.

Protesters call for a boycott of Israel and accuse the Basque Government and the UPV of being "accomplices to the genocide." On the arrival of lehendakari Pradales there have been cries and even moments of tension, so the start of the event has been delayed by a few minutes. Representatives of the institutions and the university that attended the event have been silent waiting for the end of the screams.

A few years ago there was a marked economic difference between living in a residence or taking a rental apartment with other students. The second option was much cheaper. Today, however, this gap has been narrowed due, among other things, to the prices of flats in the Basque capitals. However, it is clear that by the end of August the most difficult thing is to find a place at any opportunity. 

The company has been transporting and bringing students from Vitoria-Gasteiz to the campuses in Bizkaia for four decades, but they argue that the service is not economically viable.

The University of Navarre is one of the top 500 universities in the world. The University of Bordeaux, on which the Bayonne campus depends, is among the top 300.

Joxerramon Bengoetxea has stressed the "importance of memory exercise." "We universities are obliged to do what is in our power to prevent it from recurring and to forget what happened."

The double grades maintained the upward trend of recent years, accounting for more than 3,700 enrolments, and more than half of the credits enrolled in the language were in Spanish (54.6 per cent).

The director of the UPV/EHU Geology Department has explained that the area where the earthquake occurred this Wednesday, the Kamchatka peninsula, is part of the Pacific Fire Ring, where in 2011 the earthquake that damaged the Japanese coast and caused the Fukushima nuclear accident also occurred.
