Israel intercepts several Sumud flotilla ships heading for Gaza and arrests 200 people in international waters
The Israeli Army has intercepted 13 of the 42 ships travelling to Gaza with humanitarian aid. The operation in international waters violates international law, according to Flotilla sources. Thirty ships continue their crossing under strict surveillance. There will also be protests in several countries and universities.
The threat has been met by the Israeli Army: 13 ships have been intercepted, according to Flotilla Sumud, and some 200 passengers (about 30 of them Spanish) are unaccounted for and are likely to be taken to an Israeli port for deportation.
Intercepts have taken place in international waters, some 80 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza, and the initiators of the initiative believe that they violate international law. The vessels arrested include Alma, Adara, Sirius, Aurora, Dir Yassine or Grande Blu, among others.
Despite the military operation, some 30 ships have managed to avoid the siege and, according to the latest report, are sailing 46 miles (85 kilometres) from Gaza. "The illegal interceptions in Israel will not delay us. We will continue our mission to open a humanitarian corridor," the Flotilla said in a statement.
Colombia's President Gustavo Petro has ordered the withdrawal of all diplomats from Israel and announced the violation of his free trade agreement with Tel Aviv, denouncing the "kidnapping" of the two Colombian citizens. The governments of Chile, Bolivia, Venezuela, Malaysia and Turkey have also condemned Israel's actions and demanded that Spain and France guarantee the security of their citizens.
In Rome thousands of people have taken to the streets and the Italian trade unions have called a general strike for Friday. There have also been protests in Greece, Switzerland, Spain, Turkey, Argentina, Mexico, Germany and Colombia.
In the Basque Country,university students have called for this Thursday rallies on various UPV campuses to call for an end to the Israeli blockade and to show their support for the fleet.
Meanwhile, international attention is focused on ships bound for Gaza and what will happen in the last few miles of the crossing.
