The US military has more than 36,000 troops active in the country, and the measure has been announced amid controversy with Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
U.S. President Donald Trump will withdraw 5,000 U.S. troops from German bases, senior Pentagon officials said.
"The Secretary of War has ordered the withdrawal of some 5,000 troops from Germany. This decision has been taken following a thorough review of its military deployment in Europe," Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell explained, quoted by Newsmax journalist Kellie Meyer on the X social network.
Parnell added that Washington "will completeits withdrawal in the next six or twelve months . "
The move demonstrates Trump's discontent, as Trump had threatened to withdraw troops this week because he had no support from European allies in the war against Iran.
The decision is also interpreted as a reaction to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's criticism. In fact, Merz accused Trump of "humiliating" Tehran during negotiations to reach an agreement.
At present, the United States Army has a massive presencein Germany , with more than 36,000 active personnel deployed at various facilities in the country, including the Ramstein base, the Wiesbaden headquarters, the Grafenwöhr and Hohenfels training camps in Bavaria, the Spangdahlem base and the Stuttgart military facility.
Trump warned Merz yesterday that he should focus more on "fixing" his country and ending the war inUkraine than on "intervening" in the conflict with Iran.
Merz initially supported American and Israeli attacks on Iran. However, over time, he has taken a more critical stance , which has led to Trump's rejection.
Trump has repeatedly criticized his European allies for failing to respond to Washington's call with Tel Aviv on February 28 after the war against Tehran broke out without saying anything to NATO.
