Guterres has called for the UN to resume command of aid to Gaza because the current system "kills" it

AntonioGuterres has denounced that the aid distribution system established by I Srael in the Gaza Strip " is killing people "and has warned that" it is not necessary to reinvent the wheel with dangerous methods ", but that it is enough to allow United Nations agencies and other institutions to regain responsibility for this task.

"Any operation that leads desperate civilians to militarized areas is dangerous," Guterres lamented at a hearing at the UNheadquarters in New York, where he stressed that the UN has the means and experience to act "humanely, impartially, neutrally and independently" and solve the "problem" of the distribution of aid.

According to the Gaza authorities, more than 500 people have been killed in these distribution areas, most of them by gunfire from Israeli forces. "Some people are being killed for trying to feed their families.

The head of the UN has pointed directly to Israel because international law obliges it to provide humanitarian aid in the territory it occupies  "as an occupying power", such as Gaza.

Guterres sees this week's truce between Israel and Iran as a sign of "hope" for war in the Strip: "Now is the time for courage to carry out the ceasefire in Gaza."

In this regard, and in view of the "excessive humanitarian crisis" in that part of Palestine, it hopes that the parties will build bridges to an "immediate" ceasefire. It has also called on Hamas  to unconditionally release the hostages that remain in its hands.

Looking ahead, Guterres has stressed that the underlying solution to the conflict will be "political" and that it will have to come from a two-state solution. But, for the time being, Binyamin Netanyahu's government is not even considering this solution as an option, because that would force Palestine to be recognized as a state.
