The European Parliament agrees to cut agreements with Israel, but does not regard the situation in Gaza as genocide
The plenary meeting at the Strasbourg headquarters condemns the 'humanitarian disaster' in Gaza and the 'brutal crimes' of the Hamas group, advocates sanctions on settlers using violence and Hamas and calls for an 'immediate ceasefire'.
European Parliament headquarters in Strasbourg.
On Thursday in Strasbourg, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning the 'humanitarian disaster'which is taking place in Gaza, but which it has not described as genocide, and it has also advocated the partial suspension of trade agreements between the European Union and Israel in line with what the European Commission proposed.
The resolution, with 305 votes in favour, 151 against and 122 abstentions, is not binding.
The final text adopted does not define the situation in Gaza as genocide. Indeed, of the 50 amendments tabled, all those referring to genocide have been excluded.
However, the resolution directly attributes the blockade of humanitarian aid in Gaza to Israel and, as announced on Wednesday by Ursula von der Leyen, advocates the partial suspension of trade agreements with Israel , although this decision requires the support of the 27 EU Member States.
The text has also fully supported the condemnationof Israeli settlers and activists who use violence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as well as the punishment of Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir ministers israelis.
On the other hand, MEPs have called for an'immediate ceasefire', humanitarian aid andthe releaseof all abducteesor Israelis and have condemned Hamas's' brutal crimes' and called for specific sanctions for this group.
Finally, it advocates a two-state solution to ensure lasting peace in the region.
The European People's Party voted divided: 82 MEPs voted in favour, 56 against (including some members of the German CDU) and some abstentions.
Almost all the MEPs of the PP, the PSOE and the PNV voted in favour, Vox and Podemos opposed, while those of ERC, EH Bildu, Lukashenko, Comuns and BNG abstained.
