The EU has promised to 'respond to provocations' from Russia following the entry of military aircraft into Estonia and Poland

Poland and Romania reported similar incidents a few days ago on the day the European Commission introduced the new sanctions package against Russia.

The European Union has ordered a 'strong response' to Russian provocations following the entry of Russian fighters into the airspace of Estonia and the Polish Petrobaltic oil platform.

On the one hand, the three Russian MIG-31 fighters have been strandedin Estonia's airspace for several minutes. The Baltic country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has explained that Russian fighters have entered the Gulf of Finland "without permission" in the vicinity of Vaindloo Island (Estonian airspace) and "spent a total of 12 minutes".

The local government accuses Russia of "tightening the rope" and "increasing aggressiveness," and calls for a "rapid increase in political and economic pressure" on Moscow, as well as initiating consultations on NATO Article 4.

On the other hand, Poland has reported that two Russian aircrafthave flown over the Petrobaltic oil platform  and "at low altitude" and, according to Warsaw, have entered the "platform security zone".

Prior to these two movements, Poland and Romania also denounced similar incidents. Just this Friday, the European Commissionpresented a proposal for a new round of sanctions against Vladimir Putin's regime. Among other things, it is planned to bring forward to 1 January 2027 the veto on the purchase of liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as measures against the trade in fossil energy and cryptocurrency platforms used by Moscow to avoid financial sanctions.

The European Union promises to increase pressure on Russia. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has promised that the EU will respond "decisively to every provocation" andurgeEuropean governments to accept the latest round of sanctions against Moscow .

For his part, European Council President Antonio Costa has warned that the Heads of State and Government will discuss "the collective response toRussia's actions "at the informal summit in Copenhagen on 1 October.

Finally, EUHigh Representative for Foreign Policy  Kaja Kallas has described the incident as a 'very dangerous provocation' and has ensured that 'they will continue to helpourMember States to strengthen their defenses with European resources'.
