What are the keys to Milei's victory in Argentina?
These are the keys to understanding the results of the votes in Argentina. Half of the Chamber of Deputies and one third of the Senate have been renewed.
Javier Milei's party, La Libertad Avanza (LLA), has won the legislative elections in Argentina, gaining the support they wanted to push through economic adjustment policies, after winning the election in the province of Buenos Aires just a month ago.
These are the keys to understanding the results of the votes in Argentina . Half of the Chamber of Deputies and one third of the Senate have been renewed.
1. Milei gets one third of Parliament:
Milei said during the election campaign that his goal was to get one third of the seats in the Chamber of Deputies to support reform projects and counter the opposition's attempts to block the president's decrees.
LLA has exceeded that goal: to achieve not only a third of the House, but also in the Senate, is very close if you calculate the strategic alliance it has established with the PRO, the right-wing party of former President Mauricio Macri (2015-2019).
2. More space for the "chainsaw":
With this new configuration of the congress, Milei wants to approve more structural reforms in the Argentine economy: according to statements by members of his party, the president wants to introduce a new tax regime and substantial changes in labor laws.
The ultra-right-wing economist came to the government with the promise of tax cuts, which he has so far failed to achieve, despite demands from the national productive and business sectors and foreign investment groups.
In addition, Milei wants to change recruitment formats, make social security contributions more flexible, and reduce union representation.
3. The lowest participation of democracy:
This Sunday, only 68% of voters were eligible to vote, which is the lowest turnout in legislative elections since the return of democracy in Argentina, in 1983, the end of the last dictatorship that began seven years earlier.
By 2025, there have been votes for the renewal of multi-provincial parliaments, with a generally low turnout, since in the elections in Buenos Aires only 53.3% went to vote.
4. The defeat of Peronism:
Peronism, the Fuerza Patria coalition, and its allies have suffered a severe defeat in almost every constituency, and it is now more than twenty years since the victory of the national legislators.
Peronism has also lost in the province of Buenos Aires, its main stronghold, and has been ruled by the popular Axel Kicillof, who led the campaign to win the Fuerza Patria party in provincial legislation on 7 September.
5. Yes to Milei's management and relationship with the United States:
With this result, the Argentine people support the management of Milei's government, which will be two years in power next December.
During this period, Milei's greatest achievement has been to reduce inflation through a strict adjustment plan that has, however, caused unemployment, job market insecurity, external debt, and financial market turbulence.
The president and his close collaborators, including his sister Karina, have been accused of corruption and numerous scandals.
Voters have also approved Milei's approach to Donald Trump's administration, IMF loans to the country, and US Treasury financial aid to maintain Argentina's weight.
