United States bombed Islamic State camps in Nigeria
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a missile attack on the jihadist group's facilities in the north-west of the African country.
U.S. President Donald Trump has declared that his country has launched a "powerful and deadly" attack onthe Islamic State ( EI) camps in north-west Nigeria.
The announcement has been made on the social network Truth Social, where he has assured that the operation has been carried out "under the direction of the commander-in-chief." Trump added that he had previously warned the jihadist group that, if the attacks were not stopped, there would be a military response.
According to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Tomahawk missiles have been fired during the attack from a U.S. Army vessel in the Gulf of Guinea. The head of the Pentagon has supported the operation and thanked the Nigerian Government for its cooperation.
On the other hand, the US African Command (Africom) has reported that the bombing of the camps in the state of Sokoto, near the border with Niger, by militias belonging to the State Islam, has caused "numerous casualties". Africom Commander Dagvin Anderson has stated that Washington is working with members of the region to strengthen anti-terrorist cooperation.
In recent months, the US Administration has intensified its offensive against the Islamic State in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, to neutralize the activity of jihadist groups. An Intersociety report states that in the first months of 2025, thousands of people have been killed or abducted in attacks attributed to armed Islamist groups.
