Cuba is beginning to recover electricity after its second 24-hour blackout in a week
In Havana, 70% of the electricity service is operational, but hospitals and water supply infrastructures have priority.
Cuba is recovering powerfrom 16 Cuban thermal power stations and two generators, after a second 24-hour blackout in a week, according to the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem).
The Electrical Union (UNE) has reported that around 70% of the electricity service has been restored in Havana, giving priority to the circuits and water supply infrastructures where hospitals are located. However, it has warned that the electricity generation deficit is still affecting and is still in place to restore current in 90 circuits.
In order to reconnect the National Electrical System (SEN), it is necessary to create microsystems or "islands" to start producing energy from simple start-up sources (solar, hydroelectric or motor generators), which are then connected to each other and, in Odno, transferred to small regional areas connected to each other, to supply and synchronize with SENs, thermal power plants that produce electricity.
In this process, diesel and fuel generators were previously used because they are fast to ignite and do not need electricity. But afterthe US Government's restrictions on buying oil from Cuba last January, it has run out of fuel.
The island's energy situation was critical even before this new collapse of the SEN, with long 15-hour power blackouts in Havana itself.
Most of the seven system blackouts have been linked to failures and failures , especially at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric power plant, although natural disasters have also caused these events.
Cuba has been experiencing a severe energy crisis since mid-2024, and the history of the blackouts includes seven nationals and as many partials, both because the electricity system is obsolete and because of the US oil blockade.
It is precisely these days that the convoy of Our America solidarity is in Havana, after going there to bring medicines, food and solar panels.
