NATO recalled the treaty. that it does not envisage the possibility of suspending or expelling a country
The Spanish Government has assured us that its commitment to the common defence is beyond doubt after the Pentagon has proposed the withdrawal of Spain from the Atlantic Alliance.
A NATO spokesman said on Friday that the Alliance's founding treaty "does not provide for any article" to "suspend or expel" a NATO member, despite the alleged internal e-mail from the Pentagon proposing to send Spain from NATO.
The North Atlantic Treaty, the founding document of the Atlantic Alliance, contains only a protocol for the accession of new members or for the situation in which an allied country wishes to leave NATO.
This spokesman has stated that the Treaty contains 14 Articles , noneof which provides for the possibility of suspending or expelling any Member State.
On Friday, the Spanish Government expressed its full reassurance at the suggestion of the United States to send Spain from NATO, which also recalled that the Atlantic Alliance Treaty does not permit this and also ensured that its commitment to common defence is beyond doubt.
An internal email from the Pentagon has put on the table the possibility of punishing NATO allies who have not supported military operations against Iran, according to the news agency Reuters. These options would include expelling so-called "difficult" countries , such as Spain.
Any retaliation against allied countries that have not aligned themselves with the Trump administration during the war would also affect the United Kingdom, according to information on that email, so that the US Government may not protect its sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands.
