Greepeac has called for the withdrawal of the Lemoiz aquaculture project because of the "damage" it will cause to the sea
According to the environmental group, the case of sole "is particularly worrying" not only because of its impact on the quality of marine waters, but because being a carnivorous species may pose a danger to other fish species.
Current view of the old Lemoiz nuclear power plant.
Greenpeace has called for the withdrawal of the planned aquaculture project for the cultivation of sole at the former Lemoiz nuclear power plant due to the "damage" it will cause to the Cantabrian coast, while stressing the "need to restore" the Basordas cove .
The environmental group has warned of the "negative impact" of aquaculture on marine ecosystems, especially when it comes to fish species. It has denounced the contamination of water by organic matter and toxic substances (aguicides, bactericides and antibiotics), as well as the transmissionof diseases, eutrophication of the marine environment (reduction of light and oxide) and overexploitation of the oceans, among the possible impacts of the aquaculture project.
He has also explained thatthis type of nursery does not guarantee "the welfare of fish" because being "stacked" in enclosed structures or cages causes "injuries".
In this regard, the group adds that the case of the sole fish is "particularly worrying" not only because of the impact it may have on the quality of marine waters, but because being a fish species may pose a danger to other fish species.
Greenpeace has also referred to the Sectoral Territorial Planning approved by the Basque Government in November last year, which includes the need to preserve the 'Special Protection Zones' around the Lemoiz plant .
For all these reasons, the environmental group has explained that the Vitoria-Gasteiz Administration should reject the project and implement a plan to protect the coast.
The project was presented yesterday at a hearing in Lemoiz, where President Imanol Pradales stressed that "it is much more than a fish farm" and said that the project wants to bean international benchmark .
