The special device will start at 3 p.m. this Wednesday. The government recommends observing the eclipse from a nearby location, avoiding travel and using only approved glasses.
The Basque Government will activate the LABI – Basque Country Civil Protection Plan on alert this Wednesday from 3 p.m.,coinciding with the eclipse and the yellow warning for high temperatures .
In a statement, the Basque Government has explained that is a decision that aims to "ensurethe coordination and availability of operational services and resources "in the face of planned travel and crowds to observe the sun eclipse.
Which vehicles can't drive?
The Ertzaintza, incoordination with SOS Deiak 112 and local police, will strengthen surveillance this afternoon, especially on roads and access to viewpoints. As an exceptional measure, the Directorate of Traffic has banned heavy goods vehicles of more than 7500 kilograms from travelling throughout the Basque road network between 17:00 and 23:59.
In this regard, the authorities call for "avoiding unnecessary displacement"and recommend enjoying the astronomical phenomenon from the village itself.
On the other hand, Traffic has warned that " it is absolutely forbidden to stop the vehicle in the arcenes to see the eclipse. "It has also asked to keep the lights on and recalled that you should not take pictures or look at the sun or wear eclipse glasses at the wheel.
What glasses will it take to see the eclipse?
The Basque Government has recalled that 'we must never look directly at the sun without adequate protection, even when partially covered', since this' can causeserious and irreversible injuries to the retina without pain '.
For safe observation, only certified glasses (ISO 12312-2) should be used, and the sun should not be looked at for more than 45 seconds in a row. No normal sunglasses, X-rays, smoked glass or cameras without solar filters should be used.
In addition, Euskalmet anticipates that there will be cloudy skies with very high temperatures (especially in Álava). Faced with this, the Government has asked citizens to drink water frequently, use solar cream and exercise extreme caution with minors and vulnerable people.
