Egypt has arrested more than 200 activists who were going to march for Gaza, including several Basques
In recent hours, the Egyptian armed forces have arrested or detained more than 200 activists who were on their way to participate in the World March for Peace Gaza, which aims to end the blockade imposed by Israel on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
A delegation of about 30 people has come from the Basque Country Euskal and has confirmed to EITB that there are between 5 and 10 of them held . Maite Gartzia, member of Podemos Podemos, has confirmed that the same prison is in Cairo, along with other members of Podemos, who have come to participate in the march.
Most of the detainees are French (52), Algerian (40) and there are also people from Morocco or Libya who have been arrested in hotels and at Cairo airport and some have already been deported to their countries.
Between Wednesday and Thursday, 4,000 people from 80 countries are expected to arrive in Cairo.
The coordinators of the march have called on Egypt to release the detainees immediately and to allow anyone who wants to participate in the march to enter because they say that "the objectives of the march are entirely in line with the interest that Egypt itself has shown in ending the blockade and restoring stability at the borders".
The march is intended to reach the Rafah crossing on the border between Egypt and Gaza in the next few days. But the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made it clear that such a march "requires authorization" and can only be obtained by official means.
In addition to the World March for Gaza, another campaign is under way, which left Algeria last Sunday for Egypt.
The march is scheduled for Friday.
Activists from all over the world plan to march the convoy on the 13th from Cairo to Al Arish, the capital of northern Sinai. From there they plan to march on foot to Rafah for three days. Once there, they plan a 72-hour camp to return to Cairo.
Foreigners are prohibited from entering northern Sinai unless expressly authorized by the authorities.
This World March, like the Freedom Fleet kidnapped by Israel last Monday, aims to denounce the Israeli blockade of basic raw materials such as food or fuel in Gaza.
