Unicef warns of an "unprecedented" increase in child deaths in Gaza
The bombing of the Gazatis continues: at least 22 Palestinians were killed last night in other Israeli attacks.
UNICEF estimates that more than 320,000 children are at risk of malnutrition.
Following his recent visit to the region, UNICEF's Deputy Executive Director , Ted Chaiban, has denounced that children in the Gaza Strip are dying at an "unprecedented rate" and that the risk of disease appearing is "imminent" due to lack of drinking water, high temperatures and the collapse of the health system.
According to Chaiban, more than 320,000 children are at risk of malnutrition, as one in three people in Gaza spends the whole day without food.
"The signs of deep suffering and hunger are visible in the faces of families and children," the director said, while warning that a generalized famine could hit the Gaza Strip in the coming days if humanitarian aid is not allowed in a sustainable and safe manner.
Meanwhile, Israel's attacks on the civilian population do not include eten. At least 22 Palestinians were killed last nightas a result of new bombings in various areas of Gaza. The victims include civilians waiting to receive basic aid on the humanitarian axis of Netzarim, as well as entire families living in homes or camps of displaced persons in Al Zawayda and Jan Yunis.
Since the end of May, some 1,400 people have died while queuing up for aid in Gaza, and at least 162 Palestinians, including 92 minors, have died from starvation. According to the United Nations, these figures reflect a ongoing humanitarian disaster that continues to worsen with every day that passes without a truce.
Since Israel began its military offensive on 7 October 2023 , the number of deaths in the Gaza Strip has already risen to 60,300, according to figures provided by local health authorities. Although the exact number is unknown, international organizations fear that the actual number will be even higher.
