The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has urgedIsrael to "immediately stop" its plans to occupy the cityof Gaza announced by Netanyahu, an action which, according to Turk, was contrary to the ruling of the International Court of Justice.
According to the envoy, the occupation would lead toa "mass forced displacement" of some 800,000 Palestinians, as well as "more murders, more intolerable suffering, senseless destruction and heinous crimes."
"The war in Gaza must now end and Israelis and Palestinians must work together to ensure that, instead of hardening the war in peace (...), Israel makes every effort to save the lives of civilians in Gaza and to access humanitarian aid indefinitely," Turk said.
Finally, Volker Turk has called for the "immediate and unconditional release "of Israeli hostages and Palestinians detained by Israel.
"Catastrophe"
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has described the Israeli Government's decision to occupy Gaza as "devastation" and has stated that it contradicts the views of the army and security officials.
According to the Israeli opposition, the occupation "will take months" and "will result in the deaths of hostages and many soldiers." All of this, according to Lapid, "will lead to a political collapse "in the country.
He has also assured that the decision "totally contradicts" the views of the army and security officials.
"This is what Hamas wanted: for Israel to be trapped in an untargeted territory, without specifying the picture for the next day, in a useless occupation that no one understands where it leads," Lapid explained on the X social network.
