U.S. PresidentDonald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a summit in Alaskathis Friday with the aim of achieving a possible ceasefire in Ukraine and laying thefoundations for future peace talks involving Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski .
Despite both governments insisting on the importance of dialogue , Trump has admitted that there is a 25% chance that the meeting will not succeed, and the Kremlin has warned that no formal agreement is expected to be signed.
"This meeting is very important for the preparation ofthe second meeting , where an agreement will be reached (...). There will be an exchange of ideas on borders and land divisions. This second meeting will be very important. But there is a 25% chancethat this meeting will not succeed, "Trump said in an interview on Fox Radio .
The US president has clarified that, according to the results of that first meeting, he could contact Zelensky to tie up a new appointment, but has not yet specified where it would be held.
Trump has made it clear that he has not yet spoken to Zelensky about this possible second meeting and has stressed that his role is not to negotiate a peace agreement directly, but to facilitate dialoguebetween the parties. "I will let them negotiate the agreement, but I will not negotiate it directly," he stressed.
Trump's main goal at the summit will be to achieve an immediate ceasefire , a step that, in his view, would be decisive for peace. Trump does not know whether or not he will be able to achieve his goal. But, in the absence ofprogress, he has ensured that the US will impose new sanctions on Moscow.
For the White House, getting an initial ceasefire commitment would be a success, as confirmed by the New York Post , citing sources close to the president. Trump's priority is to end the war before moving toward formal peace talks that include European allies and security guarantees for Ukraine.
On the other hand, the Kremlin has assured that at the meeting between Putin and Trump, which will take place at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base, the authorities will not sign any documents. "It is ameeting to address the most complex issues, "said Russian President Dmitri Peskov 's spokesman.
Putin, for his part, has praised the "honest efforts" made by the US to stop the war\u00A0and has been willing to discuss a possiblenuclear arms control agreement and territorial issues related to the conflict in Ukraine.
The summit will begin at 11:30 a.m. local time (19:30 GMT) and will begin with a face-to-face conversation between the two leaders, followed by a working breakfast with each other's representation. Although expectations are moderate , both sides agree that this is the first step towards understanding each other in one of the most complex conflicts at present.
