Brussels applauds Putin's willingness to meet Zelensky
The European Commission is working to prepare a meeting with Ukraine and the US "as soon as possible."
The European Commission on Tuesday welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin's willingness to hold a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian Volodimir Zelenski , confirming that they are working to prepare for the meeting with Kiev and Washington "in the best possible way."
"In the past, President Putin refused to meet with Zelensky, so we welcome the fact that, of course, he has changed his mind and told US President Donald Trump that he would be willing to participate in that meeting," said Arianna Podesta , the organization's spokesman, at a press conference.
European Commission sources have explained that they have no specific information on the format of the meeting or the possible timetable for its holding, and have specified that it is up to the parties concerned to decide where the meeting will take place.
They have also announced that the technical work with Kiev and Washington will continue in the coming days and weeks on the issue of security guarantees, but that there is still no specific date for a meeting with the US administration.
At yesterday's White House meetings, US President Donald Trump was willing to participate in security assurancesfor Ukraine, along with other international partners, but did not agree on the deployment of US troops, nor did he specify exactly how Washington will participate, so the matter will be discussed shortly, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said.
Asked if Brussels is still calling for a ceasefire , European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that 'the important thing is to stop the massacre '.
At European level, however, a meeting of the Coalition of Volunteers was held today, as well as a videoconference between the Heads of State and Government of the European Union, to discuss the results of yesterday's meetings in Washington with President Trump.
