What do we know about the peace plan in Gaza?
In the first phase of the peace plan agreed this Thursday by Israel and Hamas, Israel should cease its offensive in the Gaza Strip, surrender all the hostages killed and alive by Israel Hamas, and release nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners by Israel.
The Israeli Government and Hamas have agreed this Thursday morning on the first phase of the peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump, an agreement that Trump himself has announced on social media and subsequently ratified by Israel, Hamas and Qatar.
What goes into this first phase?
- Cessation of the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip and gradual withdrawal of the Israeli army
- All hostages alive and dead should be handed over by Hamas within 72 hours of Israel publicly accepting the agreement (Trump said the exchange of prisoners could begin next Monday)
- Release of 250 Palestinian prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment and more than 1,700 Gazatis detained since 7 October 2023
- For every Israeli hostage delivered, Israel will hand over the remains of the 15 Gazatis killed
- Disarmament of the Hamas Islamist group
- Gaza reconstruction.
- Formation of a transitional government in Gaza for future negotiations for the creation of a Palestinian State
Who negotiated the deal?
Israel and Hamas have not spoken directly: negotiations have been conducted by Trump's representative for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and intermediaries from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey.
Obstacles
- This deal would only be the first part of Trump's plan, and Hamas has only partially accepted it.
- Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu denied his support for the establishment of the Palestinian state.
- Hamas has previously refused to lay down its arms until the creation of a Palestinian state
- Israel and the US do not envisage Hamas's involvement in the future Palestinian Government
The balance of a two-year genocide
Hamas attacks on Israel this Tuesday are two years old, leaving 1200 dead and 250 hostages. The Israeli offensive against the Strip on 7 October 2023 has killed more than 67,100 Palestinians, according to the Gazatis.
