Ukraine takes steps in the US peace plan as it tries to reach a "fair" agreement without losing sovereignty

Ukraine has taken steps in the last few hours to agree on the peace plan presented by the United States as it struggles to achieve a "fair" solution to the war initiated by Russia and does not jeopardize its sovereignty. In this context, European partners have called for the European Union and all parties involved in NATO to be discussed in separate forums.

Following the first round of negotiations in Geneva between the United States and Ukraine with European allies such as Germany, France and the United Kingdom, Kiev wants to join Washington and limit the most damaging aspects of a plan that includes concessions to Russia made behind the backs of Ukrainians and Europeans, such as the transfer of territory by Ukraine in the eastern region of Donbas and the impositionof a limit on the size of its army.

These changes have not yet been reported, while Ukrainians and Europeans are trying to bring positions closer together with the US Administration after acknowledging that the agreement was designed without them, and with all the doubts about its authorship, after two US senators acknowledged that the initiative started from the Russian project.

American diplomacy has stressed that its plan "is based on Russia's contributions," although it includes Ukraine's priorities, the US has drafted the proposal.

The aim, however, is to advance a joint proposalinvolving European countries and consolidating a "just" and "lasting" solution that Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski can accept, once any treaty has been ratified by him and his US counterpart, Donald Trump.

In a recorded message, the Ukrainian president valued the support and advice of international partners and called for "effective" and "viable" steps towards the end of the war.

"We expect the result to take the right steps. The first priority is a reliable peace, guaranteed security, respect for our people and respect for all those who killed Ukraine defending against Russian aggression," Zelenski said.

For its part, after being left out of the first peace proposal, EU leaders have intensified relations with their international partners and with Zelensky himself to conduct the peace negotiations. Although they do not directly criticise the efforts of the Americans, more inclined to the position of the Kremlin, the bloc wants to introduce into the plan basic issues that argue that the future of Ukraine affects European security.
