A7.6 degree earthquake hitnorthern Japan on Monday, causing several injuries, and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issueda tsunami risk alert of up to 3 metres , which has led to the evacuation of 23,000 people as a precaution.
The land movement took place at about 23:15 local time (14:15 GMT) in Japan, off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, northeast of the archipelago, with an epicenter about 50 kilometers deep, according to weather authorities.
The Japanese earthquake scale has seven levels and has been the 6th highest in the city of Hachinohe and the 6th lowest in the towns of Oirase and Hashikami .
The NHK public network has reported, without giving details, that several people have been injured in a hotel in Hachinoh.
The earthquake has been felt in much of the territory, from north to centre and east of the country, including Tokyo, where the movement has reached level 2 on the national seismic scale.
Tsunami alert
JMA has activated a tsunami alert of up to 3 metresfor Aomori Prefecture, Iwatera and the southern tip of Hokkaido Island.
The weather agency has confirmed the arrival of the first 40-centimetre tsunami wave at the port of Mutsu-Ogawara, Aomori, at 23:43 local time (14:43 GMT), and a similar one at the port of Urakawa, Hokkaido, seven minutes later.
There has also been a tsunami alert for the prefectures of Miyagi and Fukushima and the southern shores of Hokkaido, but in this case up to one metre high, and a lower alert for potential tidal changes along the entire Pacific coast.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has formed a special team to monitor the situation and has urged organizations to "immediately provide adequate information to the population and take action to prevent damage."
Tohoku Electric Power, the operator of the Higashidori eta Onagawa nuclear power plants, is studying the situation at the facility, government spokesman Minoru Kihara said.
