Fatih Akin's "Ghost Song" opens Official Film Festival Section
The world premiere of the German director's new film will open the Official Section of the 74th edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival on September 18. After the opening ceremony, the film will be shown in the Kursaal Auditorium and will be the first time Akin has competed for the Golden Shell.

The film 'Geister/Ghost Song', directed by Fatih Akin, will make its world premiere on September 18 at the Kursaal Auditorium in San Sebastian following the opening ceremony of the Festival, which will be the first time the German filmmaker has competed for the Golden Shell.
Thus, the San Sebastian Film Festival has closed its Official Section in with 17 feature films: the Golden Shell will feature filmmakers such as Mike Leigh, Pablo Larrain, Jesse Eisenberg and Nicole Garcia.
Starring Mariam Dawoud and Eren M. Güvercin, they play Farasha and Faris, two young men who meet at a graduation party and fall in love at first sight.
With this premiere, Fatih Akin will compete for the first time for the Golden Shell of the San Sebastian Film Festival, a film with which the German filmmaker gained international recognition with the film "Gegen die Wand/Duvara Kar■
A prolific career at great festivals
Akin, who has a long career as a director, screenwriter, producer and actor and has participated in major international festivals, received the Cannes Best Screenplay Award in 2007 for 'On the Other Side' and the Soul Kitchen Special Jury Award at the Venice Film Festival in 2009.
Later works include "The Father," released to the competition in Venice in 2014, and "In the Shadow," a 2017 film that earned Diane Kruger the Cannes Best Actress Award and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.
He has also directed 'The Monster of St. Pauli', released in 2019 at the Berlinale; 'Pure Gold', which in 2022 had more than a million viewers in Germany; and 'The Island of Amrum', presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025.
17 films will compete for the Golden Shell
With 'Ghost Song', the Festival will complete a list of 17 feature films that will compete for the Golden Shell and the rest of the official palmaris awards of this 74 edition.
The Official Section will feature new films by Roberto Bueso, Fred Cavayé, Jesse Eisenberg, Nicole Garcia, Mikel Gurrea, Amanda Kernell, Pablo Larrain, Mike Leigh, Gabriel Martins, Hans Petter Moland, Benjamin Naishtat, Javier Ruiz Caldera and Yeere im Ustaoque, as well as well as debuts by Ah Biao, Maha Harada and Tony Vahl.
