Trump and Zelensky have made progress towards peace in Ukraine, but no agreement has been reached
The meeting in Florida has represented a rapprochement between Washington and Kiev and the intention to involve the main European partners again. However, there are still substantial differences over security guarantees and the territorial situation in eastern Ukraine.
U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski have sent a message of progress in the peace dialogue with the intention of ending the war in Ukraine after more than three hours of meeting at the Mar-a-Lago headquarters in Florida. Despite the optimistic tone, both sides have acknowledged that there are still "important issues" to be resolved and that the agreement is not closed.
The meeting comes after a conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as several contacts between Zelensky and US Administration officials. According to Trump, more than 95% of a 20-point peace plan would be agreed, but issues like the future of Donbas or the ceasefire remain open.
Following the meeting, Trump and Zelensky have announced the creation of working groups involving the United States, Ukraine and Russia to reach an agreement "in the coming weeks"that will examine, on the one hand, the security dimension and, on the other, the economic aspects of the possible treaty, but have not specified a date or venue for the meetings.
The meeting also included a video call with European leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and leaders of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. Von der Leyen stressed that "progress has been made" but stressed that Europeis demanding strong security guarantees from Kiev .
In the same vein, French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that he will bring together the countries of the Coalition of Volunteers in Paris in early January to determine each state's contributions to a security mission following a peace agreement.
The Kremlin confirms that Putin accepted the proposal to create US working groups and rejects the 20-point plan that provides for a non-aggression treaty against Ukraine and NATO security guarantees. As for the territories, Kiev has proposed freezing the current front line or establishing a demilitarized zone in parts of the Donetsk region that still controls it.
Zelensky, for his part, has declared that Ukraine is ready for peace and has advanced that some documents du have been agreed or are in the final stages, while opening the door, under pressure from Washington, to holding elections or holding a referendum on the agreement.
Trump has insisted that the coming weeks will be crucial: "If we don't make progress, people will continue to fight and die, and we don't want that to happen," the US president warned.
