The number of people who associate migration with crime and abuse of service is down
According to a study by Ikuspegi, the Basque Observatory for Immigration, less than 10% of Basques mention immigration as the main problem in the country and only 2.7% say it affects them personally.
Social stereotypes relating immigration to the alleged increase in crime and the excessive use of social welfare systems have fallen by more than seven and six percentage points in the last year in the Basque Country, with 30.5% and 29.8% respectively of Basque citizens making these connections.
This is reflected in the work 'Barometer 2025: perceptions and attitudes towards the population of foreign origin in the Basque Country' presented this Friday in Vitoria-Gasteiz by the Basque Observatory for Immigration Ikuspegi.
As can be seen from this study, less than 10% of Basques regard immigration as the main problem in the country and only 2.7% consider it to affect them personally.
With regard to the stereotype of the alleged increase in insecurity and crime in the Basque Country with regard to immigration, more than half of the population (55 per cent) took this view in 2006, and only 29 per cent opposed this claim.
In the latter study, 30.5% of the population share the stereotype linking the two elements, while 44.2% disagree with this statement and a quarter of the interviewees are hesitant.
